BUF, the internationally acclaimed animation firm in Paris (France) that has provided spectacular special effects for many global brands and feature films, such as Batman – The Dark Knight, joined forces with local heroes, Draftfcb Johannesburg and Velocity, to create an inspiring television commercial for the new generation Lexus RX. The new ad focused primarily on the Lexus RX450h, currently the only hybrid SUV available in South Africa. The objective was to showcase its design features while demonstrating its hybrid technology in a manner that would conceptually appeal to the target market of somewhat wealthier than average males and females around 40 years of age. To achieve this, Draftfcb Johannesburg’s creative team of executive creative director, Grant Jacobsen, creative director (art direction) Leon Moodley, and creative director (copywriting) Erin Brooks linked one of South Africa’s most spectacular displays of natural beauty – the Namaqualand flowers – with the Lexus RX450h, thereby highlighting its elegant design and its environmentally friendly hybrid qualities.

Caviar, Los Angeles/Brussels/ Amsterdam director Frank Devos brings us deep into the disturbing world of social media addicts in a comic new 3-minute viral “Social Media Addicts Association Meeting” for Sony VAIO W Series out of NASCOM, Brussels, Belgium. The viral documents a Social Media Addicts Association (S.M.A.A.) meeting in which a string of addicts divulge their darkest Twitter, Facebook and MySpace-related secrets.

“S.M.A.A. Meeting” opens on several members admitting in various ways how social media has caused them to “loose everything.” We then cut to a young man ‘sharing’ to a group of fellow addicts, “I’m Mark. I have 700 friends on Facebook. I’ve got one special friend… we’ve been chatting for over a month-in-a-half now… the past few weeks she hasn’t been replying as often as she did… and I poked her earlier in the week and so far she hasn’t poked back.” Mark shifts in his shoes awkwardly before the group leader steps up to thank him for sharing. The group leader turns back to the others and spots another man on top of a bench, literally writing on the wall. The leader barks, “Matt! Matt! Stop writing on the wall please. Look, I know it’s hard.” Matt droops his head and mopes back to his seat.

The leader asks for another speaker -- no takers -- so he motions to a quiet girl who steps up and introduces herself as Newblood22. She states, “I haven’t accepted any new friend requests in three days and I didn’t publish any new pictures of my cat either.” The scene then cuts to her crying as she guiltily confesses, “But I did open two new Twitter accounts.” The leader cuts her off sympathetically, “The important thing is that you’re trying, right?” All of the members are then invited to join in a group hug and shout their mantra, “Log out, shut down, get out!” over and over again. Mid-chant, the leader’s gaze shifts to a distracted young man in back playing on his computer. “Hold it, hold it. Frank? Frank what are you doing? Are you on your Twitter account?” asks the group leader. Clearly he is. The leader goes on, “I’m really disappointed in you Frank.” Frank looks down in shame and mumbles, “Sorry.”

The viral ends with the group leader facing the camera threatening, “And don’t even think about putting that on the Internet!” and we cut to a Sony VAIO W laptop and super, “VAIO W Series: Not Approved By SMAA.”

The IOC just launched the second phase of its “Best of Us” campaign, a multifaceted, global effort that aims to bring the Olympic values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship to life and engage youth around the world.

For this latest effort, Cole & Weber created an animated TV spot titled “All Together Now.” The spot was directed by the brilliant young French directing duo, FX & Mat of Nexus Productions. In the spot, six larger-than-life Olympic athletes are depicted literally pulling countries together with rope, symbolizing the world coming together in the spirit of Olympism through the super-human effort of athletes and fans.

“All Together Now” aired for the first time this past weekend on NBC—IOC’s broadcast partner in the US—during the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics (in Berlin, Germany). The spot will be made available to broadcasters across the world, and can also be viewed on the IOC’s website. This is the first part of a campaign that will include print in Sept and a digital experience launching later in the fall. Ultimately, through the campaign, IOC hopes to build excitement for the Olympic movement between Games with the end goal of increasing interest in the Games when they do occur.

A new television commercial featuring dozens of ordinary South Africans dancing to Beyonce’s hit, ‘Single Ladies’, is an extension of Vodacom’s drive to illustrate that the internet is ‘maklik’.

Devised by Draftfcb Johannesburg executive creative director Grant Jacobsen and his team, the 60-second commercial broke late in June after three 15-second teaser ads flighted for a week to prime television viewers to expect another epic from the cellular network.

The characters from these teaser ads – two elderly farmers, a couple of gym jocks and a construction site foreman – also feature in the new commercial. The central character, however, is a goofy-looking, ordinary guy who goes on a whirlwind tour that starts in his bedroom and takes him to the colourful nooks and crannies of South Africa. He executes the dance routine performed by Beyonce Knowles and her troupe and gets all the ordinary South Africans he encounters along the way, including Vodacom favourites Bankole and De Pinna, to perform with him. The ad concludes with a subtle teaser of its own suggesting that that there is more to come – the final few seconds features show biz-styled text saying ‘connect more’ and ‘live more’ as well as a West End-style logo billing ‘connect for fame’.

LA-based David&Goliath recently launched “Brave,” a new approach to creativity and daily life at the agency. Everything they do reflects this brave approach, even their agency photo.
The attached photo brings D&G’s name and “brave” philosophy to life in an extremely graphic and memorable way. Shot on top of the agency’s parking structure using multiple flashes, smoke machines and some handy retouching, the shoot caused quite a stir in El Segundo (which is right next to LAX). Mid-shoot the agency was confronted by three police cars and told to shut down.
Apparently, the numerous camera flashes were interfering with the airport control tower and incoming planes. D&G apologized and shut down immediately. It was quite a scene, a clan of 110 hooded soldiers surrounded by smoke and cop cars. Not your typical group shot…
